Executive Coaching

Executive Coaching For Business Leaders

You have reached the top.

A coach helps you stay there, lead better, and go further.

Senior leaders and executives face a particular set of challenges that most coaching simply is not equipped to address. The pressures at the top of an organisation are different. The decisions carry more weight, the scrutiny is greater, the isolation is real, and the consequences of getting it wrong are significant.

What senior leaders rarely have is someone they can speak to with complete candour. Not a colleague. Not a board member. Not someone with a stake in the outcome. A coach who has been at that level themselves, who understands the commercial and personal pressures involved, and who can offer a genuine outside perspective.

That is what executive coaching at Coach 1st provides.

What Makes Coach 1st Different for Executive Clients

Our founder Stuart Blake spent over 35 years working at senior level in global recruitment. He has served as Managing Director at TMP Worldwide, Greatfleet PLC and HW Group PLC. He has led organisations through growth, change, restructuring and transformation. He has built teams, managed boards, navigated difficult commercial decisions and supported hundreds of leaders through the transitions and pressures that come with senior roles.

He has done the job. That is not something every executive coach can say.

That lived experience sits at the heart of our executive coaching work. We do not offer a theoretical framework applied from a distance. We offer a coach who has faced the same pressures, made the same kinds of decisions, and understands from personal experience what it means to lead at a senior level.

Combined with ICF accreditation and formal coaching qualification, the result is a coaching relationship that is rigorous, commercially grounded, and completely confidential.

What Is Executive Coaching?

Executive coaching is a structured, one to one coaching relationship focused on your performance, decisions and development as a leader. It is distinct from mentoring, consulting and management development. The coach does not tell you what to do. They help you think more clearly, challenge assumptions, work through complex situations and make better decisions.

The best executives in any field have coaches. Not because they are struggling, but because the higher the level, the more valuable an independent, skilled outside perspective becomes. The decisions get harder. The feedback gets rarer. The isolation at the top is a genuine risk to good leadership.

Executive coaching addresses all of that. It gives you a private space to think, a challenging presence that holds you to account, and a professional relationship built entirely around your development.

What We Work On

Every executive coaching engagement at Coach 1st begins with a proper assessment of where you are and what you are trying to achieve. There is no standard agenda imposed from the outset. The programme is shaped around you.

That said, the themes we work on most frequently with senior leaders and executives include:

• Performance under pressure: making good decisions consistently in high stakes situations

• Leadership style and how you come across to your team, peers and board

• Managing complexity and competing priorities without losing clarity

• Dealing with difficult people: challenging conversations, conflict and stakeholder management

• Confidence at the most senior level, including with boards, investors and external stakeholders

• Transitions into new roles or significantly increased responsibility

• Strategic thinking: stepping back from the operational and leading at the right level

• Managing the personal toll of senior leadership, including isolation, pressure and work life balance

• Preparing for the next step: whether that is a board role, a larger organisation, or a different kind of challenge

• Career decisions at a senior level, including whether to stay, move on or change direction entirely

Sessions are entirely confidential. What is discussed in coaching stays in coaching. That applies whether you are an individual commissioning coaching for yourself or an employer commissioning it for one of your senior team.

For Organisations: Investing in Your Senior Talent

Executive coaching is one of the highest return investments an organisation can make in its people. A more effective senior leader has a direct impact on the teams they lead, the decisions they make and the results the organisation achieves. The research on this is consistent and has been for decades.

At Coach 1st, we work with organisations commissioning coaching for senior leaders, newly appointed executives, high potential leaders preparing for the next level, and leaders going through significant transitions such as restructuring, merger or a change in strategic direction.

We are straightforward to work with. We do not overload you with process, reporting and frameworks. We agree the objectives, we do the work, and we keep you informed at the level that is appropriate.

Every engagement is handled with complete discretion. We understand the sensitivities involved in commissioning coaching at a senior level and take confidentiality seriously on all sides.

For Individuals: Taking Your Leadership Seriously

Many executives come to coaching at a point of transition. A new role. A difficult period. A decision they are finding hard to make. Or simply the recognition that they have reached a level where independent support would make them significantly more effective.

Whatever brings you to executive coaching, the starting point is the same: a confidential conversation about where you are, what you are dealing with, and what you want to achieve. From there, we build a programme around your specific situation.

You do not need to be in difficulty to benefit from executive coaching. The most effective leaders we work with are already performing well. They come to coaching because they want to perform better still, and because they understand the value of having someone in their corner who has no agenda other than their development.

The Recruitment Advantage

One thing that sets Coach 1st executive coaching apart from most providers is the depth of our recruitment industry background. Stuart has spent his career inside the industry that places senior leaders. He knows how boards assess executive candidates. He understands how the market for senior talent works, how executive search firms operate, and what distinguishes the leaders who consistently progress from those who plateau.

For executives who are thinking about their next career move, or who want to understand how they are positioned in the external market, that knowledge is genuinely valuable. It is not something you will find at most executive coaching practices.

We can help you think through your career positioning, understand how you are likely to be perceived by external recruiters and boards, and prepare effectively for any senior level transition you are considering.

What to Expect from an Executive Coaching Programme

Executive coaching at Coach 1st is delivered on a one to one basis. Programmes are typically structured over six months, with sessions scheduled to suit your diary. We work face to face in London and Hereford, and by video for those based elsewhere or with demanding travel schedules.

We start every engagement with a full initial conversation to establish the objectives and agree how we will measure progress. After that, the work is led by what matters to you.

There is no rigid session structure, no standard workbook and no box ticking. Each session goes where it needs to go. Some sessions are strategic and wide ranging. Others focus tightly on a specific situation or decision. The common thread is rigour, honesty and complete confidentiality throughout.
